Eskew+Dumez+Ripple is working with the New Orleans Culinary and Hospitality Institute (NOCHI) to establish a new culinary school in New Orleans. Occupying a historic 5-story Art School complex, the project will revitalize a corner of its downtown neighborhood with a street-side café and 3rd floor restaurant (served by the culinary school students) as well as event rental spaces on the top floor with large rooftop terraces. The project will also include typical classroom spaces for standard instruction.
The project includes numerous teaching kitchens and labs inserted into the historic Art School structure. BIM modeling is being used extensively to coordinate these spaces and ensure a smooth construction process with minimal modification of the historic fabric. The project is also utilizing a “design–assist” model for cost control with a general contractor and major subcontractors added to the team during the Schematic Design phase to provide continuous cost feedback as design progresses.
Recognizing a need for home-grown culinary talent in New Orleans, the NOCHI organization, in partnership with the Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tulane University has taken on this exciting adaptive re-use at an estimated cost of $12M. Financing includes State Historic and New Market tax credits.Location: New Orleans, LA Map This Location
